how to see the grand canyon on a trip to las vegas | visiting the grand canyon during a trip to las vegas | cheap ways to see the grand canyon | how far away is the grand canyon from las vegas | a memory of us

This past weekend, Tyler and I were in Las Vegas. We dedicated our Sunday to visiting the Grand Canyon.  We have been to Vegas multiple times in the past few years. Most recently, we went on a trip with friends.  We said the next time we went to Vegas we would be making a stop at the Grand Canyon. Once we decided to go on our trip, we kept looking up how to get to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas. There are a lot of different options for seeing the Grand Canyon when you are in Vegas. You can take a helicopter ride, a shuttle van, a charter bus, etc. However, many of those options require a full day and are quite expensive ($100+ per person). Tyler and I wanted to find a cheap, and easy, way to get to the Grand Canyon during our vacation.

Tyler had the idea to get a rental car, which I am so glad he did! We were able to rent a car for only $10 a day. We drove ourselves to the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was about a two hour and fifteen minute drive from Las Vegas, so it was a really easy trip to the Grand Canyon. I was glad we drove ourselves because we were on our own time. We could wake up and leave when ready, spend as much time there as we wanted, and head back to Vegas as soon as we were ready.

When you get to the West Rim you have to buy a ticket to actually get to see the Grand Canyon. With your ticket, you get on a shuttle bus which takes you to three different stops along the Grand Canyon. (This shuttle bus is a less than a 5 minute drive.) The first stop is Hualapai Ranch, where you can take a wagon ride, go horseback riding, go through the ranch, etc. Tyler and I skipped this part as we felt it was geared a little more towards kids. The next stop, is the Skywalk. The Skywalk is a glass shaped bridge that lets you look over the Grand Canyon. Again, Tyler and I opted out of this. You already pay to get on the shuttle and it costs extra to walk out onto the Skywalk. (You also are not allowed to take any belongings onto the Skywalk.) I'm sure it is amazing, but we were trying to see the Grand Canyon the cheapest way possible!

The next stop on the shuttle bus is Guano Point, which is where all the pictures you see in this post were taken! Here, you are able to hike the trails of the Grand Canyon. There are such beautiful views of the Grand Canyon here! I am so glad we made the trip to the Grand Canyon from Vegas. If you go to Vegas, and have the time, I would highly recommend you dedicate a day to it! All in all, it took Tyler and I between 6 and 7 hours to drive there, eat lunch, explore, and drive back!

I hope you enjoy these pictures from our trip to the Grand Canyon! It was such a great day trip. A full recap of our trip will be coming soon, but I had so much to say about the day at the Grand Canyon that I thought I'd talk about it separately ;). Have a great weekend!

  12. I have such a fear of heights, that seeing you so close to the edge on some of these pictures makes me nervous! Haha! I am sure you were fine, though. I love the photo of you jumping in the air. I would love to see the Grand Canyon sometime! Was the 2.5 hour drive there pretty easy?

  15. Amazing pictures! I'm so sad that even after multiple trips to Vegas, we haven't been to the Grand Canyon. We got to the Hoover Dam on our last trip, but the Canyon is definitely a must next time. I love the idea of renting a car instead of one of the expensive tours, and I'm super intrigued by the Skywalk.

  35. Amazing pictures! Next time you are in Vegas, go to the Hoover Dam but hike there through the old railroad tunnels. It's quite a hike but totally worth it to get away from the hustle and bustle of Vegas. When we went, we only saw about 20 people total on the train - going and coming! It was perfect (and FREE!).

  40. We traveled to Tempe last February for college baseball but got up super early and made the drive to the Grand Canyon through Sedona on a winding beautiful drive. It was a short trip but so worth it to see such a beautiful place. No pictures can really capture how amazing it is. If you guys ever have a chance to go to Sedona...it's breathtaking too.

  43. Your photos are beautiful! My friend and I went to Vegas several years ago and made a day trip out to the Grand Canyon. We went onto the Skywalk bridge and the people running it were a little intense!! You can't bring anything with you and you have to wear paper slippers so that you don't scratch the glass. It was a great experience.

  52. I loved this post! My husband and I are heading to Las Vegas for the first time ever for our 1 year anniversary. We will be there for a week for SEMA and want to take the day and go see the Grand Canyon. We have read numerous times that it takes 4.5 hours to get there, but your post says 2.5 hours. What route did you guys specifically take and did that route have a way to get to the Hoover Dam by chance that you can recall? I would love to know more about the distance so we are able to plan for the day trip! Thanks!

    1. I hope I am not too late to respond to this! I don't get a notification when people comment on my posts so I just now saw this! When you are looking up routes type in Las Vegas to Guano Point. It should say it takes 2 hours and 18 minutes (125.4 miles)! And yes, you will drive right past the Hoover Dam. We went there during a trip to Vegas before (post is listed down below). You can see the Hoover Dam for free or pay to go tour it! I hope that helps. Feel free to email me if you have other questions :) (amemoryofus@gmail.com) Hoover Dam Post: http://www.amemoryofus.com/2014/09/phoenix-and-vegas-snapshots.html

  53. How were you able to rent a car for $10 for the day? Do tell, ha!? My husband and I are going to Vegas for our 10 year anniversary in 3 weeks and this is tops on my list.

    1. We rented a car through Payless and it was only $10! They are definitely not as nice of a company as Avis or Hertz or something larger, but it gets the job done. Just expect to wait longer in the rental car facility to get your keys than you would for a different company : )

  54. When I look in the GPS , it tells me that the drive is 4.30 hours to that part of the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas strip! Can you show me the way you drove? Because I am about to go to Las Vegas and I want to take my parents and husband to the Grand Canyon

    1. Hi Liliana,

If you type in "Guano Point" in your GPS it should be just over two hours! (If I type in Las Vegas Strip to Guano Point it is 127 miles.)

I hope that helps! Let me know if you have other questions! :)

      Thanks,
      Darcy
