Frequent readers of the blog will know that we are a huge book family. Here are two other recent posts about kids books you might like -- Our Favorite Lift the Flap Books and The Best Toddler Halloween Books.
Today, I wanted to share my favorite books for a 3 year old. I have two little boys so my choices lean towards books for toddler boys - although I really feel like most of these would be loved by all kids. These are books my oldest loved when he was 3. Now that my youngest is approaching 3, we are finding he really loves them as well. These are some of my must have books for a 3 year old.
These are great books for toddlers. I hope you check them out and find a new book recommendation for your toddler within. Hopefully you find some unique book recommendations for toddlers within this post that you haven't heard everywhere else!
Books are a great gift idea. If you are looking for other gift ideas for a three year old, check out this post where I share The Best Gifts for a 3 Year Old.
These are my top 5 favorite books for a three year old:
1. Dragons Love Tacos - Both of my boys love this book! In this story, you learn all about why dragons love tacos (and parties). They like all kinds of tacos - just make sure they aren't spicy! Dragons hate spicy tacos. What happens when you invite dragons over for a taco party and they accidentally have spicy salsa?! As a bonus - this book has been a great way to entice my kids to eat tacos at dinnertime. We'll pretend that we are dragons eating tacos. Win-win! (There is also a sequel that my kids enjoy, too.)
2. Goodnight, Little Blue Truck - We love most of the Little Blue Truck books in our house. I really like this one because it talks about feeling safe and comfortable during storms. In this book, a thunderstorm is coming and all the animals want to hide in the barn with Little Blue. I like that it shares that storms can be scary, and that is OK to be scared, but also that they pass eventually.
3. I'm Not Just a Scribble - This is such a great story and we love a lot of them in this same series (see Invisible Scribble listed at number 10 in this list). This book is great to teach kindness and inclusion. In this story scribble is looking for other drawings to play with him. But, nobody wants to play with him because his lines are messy and they don't look like him. Eventually, the drawings decide that being mean and excluding scribble isn't right and they all decide to play together.
4. Press Here - This is an interactive book that your kiddo will be sure to love! Each page has a different instruction for your child to complete before you turn the page.
5. Where do Airplanes Sleep at Night? - If your toddler loves vehicles and things that go.. you must look into this series! (We have like 5 different versions of this book haha.) In this series, different vehicles are getting ready for bed. This book in particular talks all about different kind of airplanes and what they need to do before bed. For example, do seaplanes take a bath once they land? They are really clever and are great for learning about different things that go! My kids also like to search for the mouse on each page.
Keep reading for more of the best books to read to a toddler!
6. Daniel Tiger: Friends Forever - I like a lot of the Daniel Tiger books for good lessons for little kids. (They have a fun pumpkin patch one that my kids really like too!) In this book, Daniel gets sad when his friends are playing without him. That is something all kids will deal with so I love the lesson in how to approach it and knowing that friends are still your friends, even if they play with someone else!
7. We're Going on a Bear Hunt - A classic for a reason! Who can resist the We're Going on a Bear Hunt rhyme? My kids also love to play going on a bear hunt at home, so I love that we bring the book to life in play time!
8. The Mud Monster - All of the animals know a mud monster lives in the African jungle. It is huge! It is horrible! But nobody really has ever seen it. Until one day, a group of muddy flamingos cause terror as other animals think they are the mud monster. A portion of the royalties from this book go to conservation projects in Africa.
9. Chicks and Salsa - A guy I work with recommended this book to me. His wife is a kindergarten teacher and it was one of her favorites. In this book, chickens on the farm no longer want to eat their chicken feed. They whip up a snack of chips and salsa with some ingredients on the farm. It smells delicious and soon the other animals want different food, too! The animals decide to throw a fiesta to celebrate the new tastes. But, on the day of the fiesta all the ingredients are gone. What will the animals do instead?!
10. Invisible Scribble - Another Scribble book that I just love. In this one, a scribble tries as hard as he can but never makes a drawing show up on paper. Other colors and drawings try to help him. Finally, they figure out what makes him different and how he can use that to make his own colorful scribble! I love that this talks about friends helping one another, being kind, and also that being different is OK.
We love to read in this house so sharing 5 more favorite books for a 3 year old...
11. Super Pooper and Whizz Kid: Potty Power! - This is one of my favorite books about potty training. My oldest thought this book was hilarious. This book helps kids recognize the signs that they need to go potty and celebrates them when they go. It has really fun illustrations and bright colors that captures attention. If you are potty training -- get this book!
12. Plant the Tiny Seed - This is another interactive kids book, similar to Press Here. In this book, you interact with each page to make a garden grow. For example, tap the seeds or clap to make it rain.
13. Steam Train, Dream Train - A fun book for kiddos who like trains. This is a great book before bed. In this book, animals are loading the train with different cargo. It is a great way to get familiar with new animals and train cars.
14. Pirate Jack Gets Dressed - My son was a pirate for Halloween when he was 2.5 so we went through a bit of a pirate phase. This was a cute book. Pirate Jack is getting dressed for the day and puts on something of each color. But, he doesn't have something green! What can he find that is green? This is a playful book that is great for teaching colors.
15. The Box Turtle - Last but not least - The Box Turtle! Terrance the Turtle was born without a shell - so he has always used a box for shell. He always liked his box, until someone told him it was weird. Is there a better shell out there for him? Cute story with a message of self acceptance.
These are all great picture books for toddlers! I hope you found some unique book recommendations for a three year old in this post! What is your favorite book to read to your 3 year old? Share it in the comments!
