Believe it or not, the holidays are quickly approaching. We have received 4 (!!) toy catalogs in the mail already. As my kids start to think about their Christmas wishlists this year, I've started to think about what they got for Christmas last year. I am always trying to buy presents purposefully and choose gifts I know my kids will actually love. My son will turn 7 in January so today I thought I would share some of the things he got for Christmas last year that he still reaches for almost a year later.
Because these are presents we are still playing with almost a year later, I feel it is safe to say these are Christmas gift ideas for a 6 year old boy that they actually want. Keep reading to see some of my unique Christmas gift ideas for a six year old.
Psst. want to see how this list compares to what was on his Christmas list last year? Head to this blog post from last year where I shared "What I'm Actually Buying My 6 Year Old for Christmas This Year". Since I know people like to shop at a variety of retailers, when able I will link the product to multiple stores below.
1. Make That Most Magnificent Thing Game - I'm not joking when I say he opened this up on Christmas and we proceeded to play it every single day until at least the middle of February. My kids LOVE this game. I like it too because you can make it as long or as short as you wanted based on the number of rounds played. Essentially, there are a bunch of pieces with pictures on them of common household objects -- a rake, a bowl, a wagon, etc -- and idea cards which give you different types of inventions. For example, monster trap, coolest dog house, etc. Turn the timer over and everyone builds their version of whatever is on the idea card. Once the timer is done, everyone presents their ideas. At the end of each round, one person hands out badges to each player for things like "Best Story", "Wackiest Contraption" and of course the "Most Magnificent Thing". Available at multiple stores such as Macy's, Barnes and Nobel, and Amazon.
2. Gravity Maze - We love games in our house, but sometimes my son needs a 1 person activity. Gravity Maze was a great addition to our game cabinet. This is a single player logic game where you make a small marble maze. Cards varying in level of difficulty will give you the starting and end point of your maze. It's up to you figure out how to complete the maze to make the marble get from start to finish. This is a great game for him to pull out when he needs to play independently. In fact, he just pulled it out last weekend while we were watching football! Available at multiple stores such as Walmart, Target, or Amazon.
3. Leap Move - Leap Move was his most requested item last year. It's like a Wii where you play interactive games. However, since it's from Leap Frog most games are educational. You hook a small camera up to your tv and it captures you on the screen. The Leap Move puts you into the game where you have to run, jump, duck, and more to win different games. I will be honest and say I do think we are soon approaching where he has outgrown the games. (He's asking for a Nintendo Switch this year. However, I'm not comfortable with him having one yet.) Although I do think he is getting ready to upgrade to something a little more challenging, this has been great for him over the year to have another way to get some movement in during the day. He is still asking to play it so I'll consider it a win! I actually just asked him what his favorite gift was that he got for Christmas last year and he said the Leap Move! Available at multiple stores such as Kohls (my favorite - earn Kohls cash!), Amazon, Target or Walmart.
5. Ticket to Ride First Journey - I was so excited to introduce my son to Ticket to Ride as it is one of my favorite board games to play. We got him Ticket to Ride First Journey for Christmas and he quickly figured the game out and asked to move up to the "regular" version. In Ticket to Ride First Journey, the board is a map of the United States with different cities listed and connected by train routes. Everyone is dealt a few train routes and the goal is to complete your routes. The cities are all connected by colored spaces and on each turn you draw cards of different colors to try to complete your routes. We now regularly play the Ticket to Ride my husband and I got many, many years ago. (Same premise - just more challenging). It is so fun to share this game with him! Ticket to Ride is available at Target and Amazon. For whatever reason, the junior reason is hard to find. Check it out at Michaels or Barnes and Noble
6. Lakeshore Learning Robot - This remote controlled robot is something my son asked for multiple times last year. You can connect different gear pieces to create your own robot and then drive it around. He loves to use his creativity to build different robots. If you don't have a Lakeshore Learning nearby, this one available at Amazon from Learning Resources appears similar.
7. Skillmatics Foil Art Set - I love having some art activities on hand, and Skillmatics is always one of my favorite brands. This foil art set is a huge hit! The kit comes with different cards or background that you can place your stickers on. But, these aren't just any sticker. They are made by placing colored foil sheets on top of a foam sticker. I don't honestly understand how it works but the colored foil transfers to the sticker. It is so cool! Once you're done designing the sticker, place it into the scene to create a cool picture. We have the space set.
8. Hey Clay! - If your kids like play-doh, but you want something cleaner... look into Hay Clay! Not only is Hay Clay cleaner but it also is easier to mold. Hey Clay is a modeling clay kit you can sculpt into really neat designs. Each box is themed and gives you access to video instructions to follow along with, if desired. Once dried, the creations hold their design. We will definitely be putting more of these on our Christmas list this year! Check it out at Fat Brain Toys, Target or Amazon
9. Legos - I just don't think you can ever go wrong with Legos for a gift. Last year for Christmas he received the Lego Delivery Truck. This took him a few days to put together and is something he still has displayed and plays with now. I love the sets that he plays with once done building as we get more use out of them!
10. 100 Piece Puzzle Set - A boxed set of puzzles is great to keep on hand. I can't find the exact one we purchased last year, but it included 4 different puzzles of varying difficulty. Each puzzle is stored in a bag in the box so it is super easy storage. This one at Target looks pretty similar to what we bought last year.
I hope this list helps if you are looking for 6 year boy Christmas present ideas. These are things my son got last year and still uses almost a year later so I feel safe saying these are all tried and true Christmas Gifts for a 6 year old boy.
